Arzachena, Michele Ruzittu Civic Museum

The Civic Museum of Arzachena bears the name of Michele Ruzittu, the founding father and supporter of municipal autonomy in 1922. The journey inside the Michele Ruzittu Civic Museum begins with a video presentation of the history and geomorphology of the territory. The exhibition space is organized in three main rooms on two floors to which is added a small educational space dedicated to children. The archaeological section hosts the exhibition “Time Rediscovered. The archaeological heritage of Arzachena from the Neolithic to Rome”. For the first time, more than 200 artifacts from different housing, funerary and cultural contexts in the area are on display in Arzachena. The exhibition traces the millennial history of the Arzachense territory through interesting artifacts that tell the life and death of ancient human communities starting from 6000 years ago. Particular attention is given to life in the Nuragic era thanks to the numerous and precious finds from the nuragic complex of “La Prisgiona”, to which an entire room is dedicated. The objects found in the nuraghe and the village represent moments in the daily and spiritual life of the inhabitants and specific productive and craft activities that took place in the settlement. Multimedia and interactive devices provide visitors with special and in-depth information on the archaeological heritage on display. The mineralogical exhibition consists of a careful selection of samples belonging to the rich Casciu Collection. Over the years, the Sardinian collector has collected and catalogued more than 6000 finds including minerals, rocks and fossils dating back up to 500 million years ago, mostly from Sardinia and others from Italian territory and from various parts of the world. The collection includes the most widespread and important minerals related to classical archaeological situations, mainly from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The main mineralizations of Sulcis—Iglesiente, Medio Campidano and Cagliari are documented. The current set-up includes a selection of valuable samples. The selection focuses on the most representative minerals coming from the depths of the Sardinian mines, such as calcites, barites and fluorites, which testify to a mining past that made our island famous even in ancient times. The section dedicated to temporary exhibitions, inaugurated in April 2022, has recently seen the succession of several art and photography exhibitions: “Alzachinesi-The Face of Arzachena in 100 Portraits” (April 8, 2022 - April 17, 2023): works created by the Sardinian painter Davide Siddi; “Pleasure, it's not me! Four masterpieces in search of identity” (21 April - 23 July 2023): four works by René Magritte, Giorgio De Chirico, Mario Sironi and Gino Severini with those of ten contemporary artists; “Eye-D” (6 August-30 September 2023): photographic exhibition with exposed shots by Sting, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel himself, Robert Plant, Annie Lennox, Brian Eno, David Byrne and many others.
